The year 1929 saw, by order of 4 May, the institution of a Medal of Honor of Physical Education, with three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold), and rewarding the services rendered under Education physical, sports and preparation for military service.
Previously, the state had little means to honor and recognize the services rendered by persons who were engaged in Physical Education. The only existing awards were:

- Letters of congratulations;

- Citations in the Official Bulletin of the Ministry of Education;

- Quotes the newsletter with congratulatory letters;

- Awarding medals of honor under the Ministry of War;

- Appointment or promotion in the Order of the Legion of Honour in the quota of the Ministry of National Education.

During the Second World War, between 1939 and 1945, the award of the Medal of Honour of Physical Education was suspended.

It was replaced, following the Decree of 27 November 1946, the Medal of Physical Education and Sports.
The latter still had three levels rewarding seniority of services:

- The Bronze Medal for 8 years of service;

- The Silver Medal for 13 years of service;

- The Gold Medal for 16 years of service.

The annual quota, initially set for the metropolis and overseas in 3000 Bronze medal, 1500 Silver Medals and 200 gold medals, was carried by the decree of 23 July 1951, at 4500 medals Bronze, 2250 Silver Medals and 450 gold medals.
The three levels could be awarded exceptionally quota during special sporting events.

The Medal of Honour of the Youth and Sports was established by Decree No. 56-688, July 6, 1956, the same day as the Order of Sports Merit.
Both awards were substituted, as of that date, the Medal of Physical Education and Sports.
When the constitution of the Order of Sports Merit, holders of the Medal Physical Education and Sports were reclassified as follows:

- Holders of the Bronze level became holders of the Medal of Honor for Youth and Sports;

- Holders of Silver level became Knights of the Sports Merit;

- The level the holders Or Officers became the Sports Merit.

The Honorary Medal of Youth and Sport therefore did not include more than a level (Silver), worn with a ribbon 32 mm wide, with two Nattier blue navy blue stripes on each side .
In 1963, the Decree of 3 December, establishing the National Order of Merit, suppressed the Order of Sports Merit.

Decree No. 69-942 of 14 October 1969, created the Medal of Youth and Sports to replace the honor of Youth and Sports Medal.
It has three levels that reward seniority of services:

- The Bronze Medal for 8 years of service;

- The Silver Medal for 12 years of service;

- The Gold Medal for 20 years of service.

It can be awarded, exceptionally, to any of the three levels of seniority and unconditionally, because of the quality of services rendered (Olympic games, championships, etc.). Holders of the silver medal, may be offered the rank of Knight of Academic Palms as a sport.
The Medal of Youth and Sports is awarded twice a year, on 1 January and 14 July. Promotions are published in the Official Bulletin decorations, medals and awards.

Decree No. 2013-1191 of 18 December 2013, modifies the denomination of the coin which is now called "Medal of youth, sports and civic engagement."
Seniority necessary to obtain different levels is further reduced:

- The Bronze medal for 6 years of service;

- The Silver Medal for 10 years of service;

- The Gold Medal for 15 years of service.
