Silvered metal cross bottony, a bar above inscribed ‘SAUVETEURS DU NORD’ with castellated mural suspension ; the face with gilt crossed fireman’s axes and naval anchor imposed, dated ‘1877’ above ; the reverse plain ; on original ribbon. The Life-Savers Society of the Nord was founded in 1877. The Nord Department runs from the North Sea port of Dunkirk south-east along the Belgian border and includes the great city of Lille.
