It was created by decree of May 15, 1883, the same year as the Order of Agricultural Merit. It is the oldest order of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The decree of June 25, 1884 establishing the quota of 200 medals to be awarded to employees based. The number rose to 250 in 1891 (as of June 30). Shareholders, employees service lands, then received a salary supplement of CHF 50.

The law of January 21, 1910 allowed the creation for the benefit of the employees commons, a special quota of 250 medals, for a reward of 50 francs, payable half to the municipalities, half to the state.

Second model (since 1893)

The second model is characterized by the existence of two types of badges differentiated by their setbacks:

¨ a first type awarded between 1894 and 1904 contained fewer than 600 copies;

¨ a second species that has been distinguished since 1905.
