What they are awarded for: for significant contributions to the support and development of Christian traditions, interfaith dialogue to ensure religious harmony and peace, services to the preservation of Christian shrines in the Holy Land; The order is awarded to outstanding church leaders, politicians, and members of religious communities

It is known that on July 15, 1907, Patriarch Damian of Jerusalem, in response to the presentation of scientific work to him, proclaimed Academician N.P. Likhachev “Knight of the Holy Sepulcher” and, through his Moscow representative, presented him with a cross, which was worn on his chest.

The Order Cross is gold, four-pointed, with an elongated lower end. On the front side there is a narrow black cross of the same shape made with enamel. Around the cross is an enameled rim in the shape of a green laurel wreath. At the upper end of the cross there is a crown with an attachment for a one-color ribbon, which is tied around the neck. At the lower end there is a spherical screw head, which fastens the halves of the reliquary cross. On the reverse side of the cross there is a Greek inscription ΕΝ ΤΟΥΤΩ ΝΙΚΑ ("By this victory") at the four ends of the cross and ΕΝ ΕΤΕΙ 312 ("in the year 312") below: both inscriptions indicate the fateful sign of the Cross revealed to the Equal-to-the-Apostles Tsar Constantine the Great in 312. The breast star of the order is a silver eight-pointed one with an order cross in the center. There are different degrees of the order: in some cases, in the center of the order cross there is simply an intersection of black lines, in others there is a round enamel medallion with the image of Christ or the Nativity of Christ with the French inscription JERUSALEM MERE DES EGLISES ("Jerusalem - Mother of Churches").
