The Order of the Sword is a Swedish military order of merit for military personnel of all degrees who have personally committed themselves to Sweden or to Swedish interests in the military area. The Grand Master of the Order is the King of Sweden The Order of the Sword is also called “the yellow ribbon”.
The Order of the Sword includes the sword symbol in silver, founded in 1850, and the sword medal in gold and silver, also founded in 1850

Story

The Order of the Sword was founded in 1522 by King Gustav I Wasa and renewed and established by Frederick I in 1748. King Adolf Friedrich later confirmed it with small changes. He received new statutes from Gustav IV on November 26, 1798.
Order classes
From 1748 the order consisted of the commander and knight classes. In 1778 the Grand Cross was added, and in 1873 the commander 1st class. According to the statutes supplement of November 25, 1889, the knight class was divided into two departments. The number of members in the first two classes was limited to 24 members each.

If Sweden is at war, the classes Knight with Grand Cross 1st Class and Knight with Grand Cross are also awarded. For personal bravery in war there is also the Military Cross of the Order of the Sword in gold, silver and bronze.
The princes of the royal house received the Commander's Cross at birth. Swedish military personnel could only be awarded the Commander's Cross after twenty years of impeccable service. In the event of war, the years of which were counted twice, there was a separate decoration, awarded only for service to the enemy, the Knights of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword, 1st and 2nd Class. The medal could also be awarded in the event of a serious wound or when an enemy victory symbol was captured.
The knighthood took place during the campaign and always in the open air. The order's not inconsiderable income was used for pensions.

Order decoration

The decoration and the habit of the order underwent several changes over time.
The medal consists of a white, octagonal cross with golden crowns in the angles, over which two swords are held crosswise by a sword hanger. On the azure obverse of the central shield there is a naked, upright sword surrounded by three crowns, and on the lapel there is a sword with a laurel wreath

Carrying method

At festivals, the commanders with the Grand Cross wear a chain of eleven swords with a sword hanging around them and eleven blue helmets lying on shields, as well as a star on their chest and an upright sword. The cross is usually carried over the shoulder on a yellow ribbon with a blue edge. The commanders wear the medal's emblem around their neck and two crossed swords on their chest along with a smaller silver star on their chest, the knights wear a cross without the surrounding swords. The order had a special festive costume of light blue and white.
