The House Order of the Golden Lion was the highest award of Hesse-Kassel, and the Electorate of Hesse and the Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine.
History

It was donated on 14 August 1770 by the Landgrave Frederick II. Of Hesse-Kassel in a class. Patron saint was Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, ancestress of the founder. The Order was intended to reward and appreciation excellent merits and as house decorations. Elector Wilhelm I. advanced him with statutes supplement dated January 1, 1818 to three classes. On August 20, 1851, the separate Wilhelmsorden founded for the extension classes of the year 1818 by Elector Frederick William.

After the occupation of Electoral Hesse by Prussia in 1866, the House Order of the Golden Lion was taken in the series of royal Prussian order. The order of the number of the latter was again removed by Decree of 27 August 1875.

After the death of the last Elector of Hesse-Kassel, the Order of Grand Duke Ludwig II. Was taken over by Hesse-Darmstadt. He gave him new statutes on June 6, 1876, appointed him as the new Grand Ducal Order. He was equal to the Grand Cross of the Order of Louis. With the abdication of the last Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, 1918, the Order became extinct final.
