The Order of Merit for Science and Art was founded on July 30, 1873 Duke Friedrich I of Anhalt and in recognition and reward excellent and outstanding achievements in the field of science and art to nationals and foreigners.
Medal decoration

The religious character of the first model (1873-1905) is a highly oval gilt bronze medal, which is surrounded by 24 sharp beams and is supported by a crown. In the middle of the letter F (Friedrich) in Gothic script and below the semicircular inscription DUKE OF EVIDENCE. On the back of the four-line inscription FOR SCIENCE AND ART is to be read, which is surrounded by an open top and bottom tied laurel wreath.

The second model (1905-1918) is gilded bronze or enclosed in silver (III. Class) and instead of radiation by a dense laurel wreath. At the back the Anhalt coat of arms with the inscription FOR SCIENCE AND ART.
