The Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes is a state award of the Republic of Cuba and one of the three highest orders, along with the Orders of José Martí and Playa Giron. Story The order is named after national hero Carlos Manuel Cespedes, a key figure in the Ten Years' War and fighter for Cuba's independence from the Spanish colonialists. Established by Decree No. 486 of April 18, 1926, amended by Law No. 586 of October 7, 1959. Accession to the new award system was established by Legislative Decree No. 30 of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba “On Awards, Honorary Titles and Insignias” dated December 10, 1979. Ranked 2nd in the hierarchy of Cuban orders. Awarded to Cuban and foreign citizens, heads of state and government, political, state and other outstanding personalities of foreign countries for their achievements in the national liberation struggle, their solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and their great contribution to strengthening peace. Notable award winners Chester Nimitz – Fleet Admiral, Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet during World War II (from mid-December 1941). Ernest Hemingway (1954) – American writer, Nobel Prize winner. Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev (1981) – Soviet statesman and party leader. Ivan Vasilievich Arkhipov (1986) – Soviet statesman Jorge Amado (1988) is a Brazilian writer. Hage Geingob (1994) is a Namibian politician and statesman. Juan Miguel Gonzalez Quintana (2000) is the father of a Cuban boy who “returned” to Cuba from the United States. Hugo Chávez (December 14, 2004) is a Venezuelan statesman and military leader.
