Circular silvered bronze medal with laterally-pierced knob suspension; the face with a female head facing left and wearing a laurel-wreathed Phrygian bonnet, representative of the French Republic, circumscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘O. Roty’ (for the great French sculptor and medallist Louis Oscar Roty, 1846-1911); the reverse with a scrolled plaque with the attribution ‘GAUTIER / LOUIS / 1935’ and supporting a steam locomotive face-on stopped at a signal, flanked by a laurel and oak wreath inscribed ‘HONNEUR TRAVAIL’, circumscribed ‘MINISTERE DES TRAVAUX PUBLICS • CHEMINS DE FER’ (Ministry of Public Works • Railways); with bronze assay mark and triangular maker’s mark of Artus Bertrand & Cie. of Paris on the edge at the base; on original ribbon mounted for wear in th French style and with distinctive original stamped silvered bronze bar in the form of a steam locomotive side-on facing right.
The Medal was instituted on 19 August 1913 to reward long service or exceptional acts of courage and devotion by those working on the railways. For the silver medal, an act of outstanding bravery or merit or 30 years’ service (25 years as mechanic/driver) in France or 20 years on the Colonial railways was required.
This example is of the first type, awarded from 1942.
